FBI: Ragnar Locker Ransomware Targets 52 US Critical Infrastructure Organizations

The FBI announced on Monday that at least 52 critical infrastructure entities in the United States have fallen victim to the Ragnar Locker ransomware group as of January 2022.

In a FLASH advisory detailing the indicators of compromise (IOCs) related to these breaches, the FBI indicated that the impacted organizations span ten sectors, including energy, financial services, government, and IT.

Growing Cyber Threats

Notably, 83% of critical infrastructure companies have reported experiencing breaches in the past three years. The FBI continues to discourage ransomware payments, while Ragnar Locker threatens to leak sensitive data if victims contact law enforcement.

While specific details about the affected entities and the extent of the extortion remain undisclosed, one significant target of the group was Capcom, an attack that impacted nearly half a million individuals.

Ragnar Locker has been on the FBI’s radar since April 2020 and has influenced the tactics of other ransomware groups, such as Maze, while forming a ‘ransomware cartel’ with LockBit, Conti, SunCrypt, and Maze.
